The Mandate of this Office have been articulated in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania (1977) Article 47 which establishes the Vice President’s Office responsible in assisting the President on all matters pertaining to the United Republic of Tanzania and in particular to coordinate Union Affairs.

This is read together with Act No. 34 of 1994 which stipulates the role of the Vice President in coordinating cooperation between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar on non union matters.
